Audience: Beginner youth flag football coaches introducing or rebuilding flag-pulling habits.
How to use it
A step-by-step progression from identifying the flag to pulling it safely while moving, so defenders learn control before speed.
- Stage 1: Players point to the flag location and practice a two-foot stop.
- Stage 2: In pairs, the defender walks to the ball carrier, bends, and pulls the flag with one hand.
- Stage 3: Add a slow jog and require the defender to stay in the carrier's lane.
- Stage 4: Use a short angle—carrier crosses a cone gate while defender closes from the side.
- Stage 5: Finish with a 2v2 game where a clean pull ends the play and both players reset.
Setup notes
Use wide lanes and a separate waiting line. Inspect flag belts before starting and stop any drill that turns into grabbing clothing.
