Audience: Youth baseball coaches who need a repeatable way to plan batting order, positions, and bench turns.

How to use it

A planning guide for building a transparent baseball lineup and defensive rotation before game day, with local rules left in charge.

  1. Start with the confirmed roster and mark absences before assigning any positions.
  2. Write the batting order separately from the defensive card so a late scratch does not scramble every inning.
  3. Track innings at each position and bench turns; check that the same player is not sitting twice before everyone sits once.
  4. Review pitcher, catcher, minimum-play, and safety restrictions against the current league rules before sharing the card.
  5. Make a clean dugout copy and a separate notes copy for the coach.

Setup notes

Build the rotation at least one day ahead, then recheck it after warm-ups. Use pencil or a reusable sleeve because attendance changes.

Coach cues

  • Use a neutral position such as Extra OF only if the local rules permit it.
  • Rotate responsibility, not just the most visible infield spots.
  • Tell players where they start and when the next check-in happens.

Equipment

  • Roster
  • Inning grid
  • Pencil
  • Clipboard
  • Current league rulebook

Watch for

  • Treating a sample rotation as a league rule
  • Forgetting a late arrival
  • Tracking positions without tracking bench innings
