Small-Roster Flag Football Practice Plan

A flexible flag football session for a small turnout, using compact games and role changes instead of waiting for full teams.

Audience: Flag football coaches who may have six to eight players at practice.

How to use it

A flexible flag football session for a small turnout, using compact games and role changes instead of waiting for full teams.

  1. 0–8 min: Players warm up through a cone lane while the coach checks flags and throwing space.
  2. 8–18 min: Pair flag-pull and open-space work; switch offense and defense every few repetitions.
  3. 18–30 min: Run 2v2 or 3v3 route-and-catch games with a clear end zone.
  4. 30–42 min: Play a numbers-up game where the offense must find a new lane after each play.
  5. 42–52 min: Add a rotating passer and defender so every player practices both roles.
  6. 52–60 min: Review one spacing cue, pack gear, and note who needs a different challenge next time.

Setup notes

Shrink the field before adding rules. Set a waiting cone outside the play area so the next player can enter only after the whistle.

Coach cues

  • Use numbers to create decisions, not to punish a small turnout.
