First Youth Soccer Practice Plan

A welcoming first soccer practice that teaches names, ball ownership, safe boundaries, and a simple game with minimal waiting.

Audience: A volunteer coach starting a beginner youth soccer team.

How to use it

A welcoming first soccer practice that teaches names, ball ownership, safe boundaries, and a simple game with minimal waiting.

  1. 0–8 min: Welcome circle, name-and-movement game, and the stop signal.
  2. 8–18 min: Every player with a ball—dribble, stop, turn, and find a colored gate.
  3. 18–28 min: Partner passing through a gate with a gentle first touch.
  4. 28–40 min: 1v1 to a gate, with the defender starting after the attacker moves.
  5. 40–50 min: 3v3 game with kick-ins or restarts that match the local format.
  6. 50–55 min: Gather balls, ask what felt fun, and share the next arrival detail.

Setup notes

Use a compact space with visible boundaries and an extra ball supply at the coach's feet. Keep the first game small so every player sees the ball.
