Audience: Adults coaching a youth team for the first time.
How to use it
A start-to-finish checklist for a new coach to turn a league assignment into a prepared first practice and a clear family message.
- Confirm the league contact, current rules, schedule, field or court access, and required safeguarding steps.
- Build a roster and approved communication path; learn what information the league expects you to carry.
- Walk the practice space, plan a first session, and identify weather or facility changes.
- Check equipment, recruit only the helpers the league permits, and send a concise parent welcome message.
- Before the season starts, write the first three practice goals and one backup plan.
Setup notes
Work through this with the league's official onboarding information beside you. Mark dates, owners, and follow-up items rather than checking a box without evidence.
